404 object not found_introduction

404 object not found_introduction

19-22 June 2003
The first “404 Object Not Found” took place from 19-22 June 2003 in Dortmund, Germany.
Hans D. Christ and Iris Dressler were co-directors of this international congress.

Nathalie Boseul SHIN invited “404 project” to Total Museum of Contemporary Art (Seoul Korea on Oct. 2006) and opened the 2nd stage based on Korean media environment.

20 Oct – 19 Nov. 2006

With this background, “404 Object Not Found_Seoul 2006” followed the basic structure of the first 404 project in Dortmund: it encompassed lectures, workgroup (research project), and panel discussion. Outputs of “404 project” were presented through exhibition, research project presentation and symposium.
Even though, we keep following the basic structure, but we also keep it in mind that there are many changes since 2003. Besides, the main hosting venue of this project has changed from Europe to Asia, especially in Korea. Therefore we should make a little bit changes of the whole program.

First of all, we narrowed down on the theme. Instead of dealing with every part of the media art archiving, we focused on net-based project and data archiving on the web. We also discussed about media installation work only for the introduction.
Second, if the first 404 project emphasized on the symposium and the congress, the 404 Project in Seoul will put more importance on the exhibition at the physical museum space. We expect that it will question about how to make a ‘tactical’ exhibition with ‘non-material/data works.’

Finally, we expected that the 404 Project in Seoul was able to be a platform for a next level of the presentation and preservation for web-based/data art works.

23-27 Oct. 2007
Thanks to enthusiastic participants from domestic and abroad, “404 in Seoul 2006” made great success and the chance to make “404 in Seoul 2007”

From the result of “404 in Seoul 2006” it is clarified to put more professional experiences on this project. It is because “404 project” aims to make the practical platform. In this context, “404 in Seoul 2007” invited experts on this field for the intensive workshop.
