404 Object Not Found_Seoul 2006:

Introduction

With the Lottery Art Foundation, Total Museum of Contemporary Art has launched a research project "404 Object Not Found_Seoul 2006" to overview the various case studies of production, presentation and preservation in media art.

The first "404 Object Not Found" took place from 19-22 June 2003 in Dortmund, Germany. Hans D. Christ and Iris Dressler were co-directors of this international congress. Total Museum of Contemporary Art / Nathalie Boseul SHIN have discussed with Hans D. Christ; we decided to take the next level.
On this background, "404 Object Not Found_Seoul 2006" follows the basic structure of the first 404 project in Dortmund: it encompasses lectures, research project, and panel discussion. It will be presented through exhibition, research project presentation and symposium.

However, we also keep it in mind that there are many changes during the last three years. Besides, the main hosting venue has changed from Europe to Asia, especially in Korea. Therefore we should make a bit changes of the whole program. First of all, we narrowed down on the theme. Instead of dealing with every part of the media art archiving, we focus on net-based project and data archiving on the web. We will also discuss about media installation work only for the introduction. Second, if the first 404 project emphasized on the symposium and the congress, the 404 Project in Seoul will put more importance on the exhibition at the physical museum space. We expect that it will question about how to make a 'tactical' exhibition with 'non-material/data works'.

Finally, we are expecting that the 404 Project in Seoul could be a platform for a next level of the presentation and preservation for web-based/data art works.
