The culture of housing and that of neighborhoods have developed as quite separate
disciplines, each almost invariably ignoring the other. Houses are built side
by side, and the neighborhood is finished when the last one has been erected.
One's home - my home is regarded as the
means whereby I can shut myself off from my neighborhood and from the city;
it is a means of defending and isolating myself from an oppressive landscape
and a society that grows out of social barriers rather than social contacts
